We warmly invite scholars, urban planners, practitioners, NGO’s and organisations from different disciplines to contribute to the Carin-PT Conference ‘Towards inclusive public transport in urban regions’ (Brussels, February 6-7, 2025), to share, discuss and challenge research for more inclusive, resilient and just public transport (planning).
Submit a proposal – Deadline extended until October 31st!
The conference seeks to refocus public transport research and policy on justice, equity, and fairness, principles that have been sidelined in favor of technological advancements, efficiency, and climate adaptation. The conference builds on existing research around inclusiveness, social sustainability, and transport justice, highlighting three key dimensions: the distribution of access and benefits, the recognition of diverse public transport needs, and the participation in decision-making processes. Through a two-day conference, we will create a platform for the exchange of best practices, experiences, critical reflections and challenges.
Contributions are invited to address the inclusiveness of public transport systems in various urban regions, including both densely populated, peri-urban, and remote areas, possibly from an intersectional perspective. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the integration of micro-mobility with public transport, the role of flexible and on-demand systems, inclusive TOD, and the impact of pricing on transport inclusivity. Additionally, the conference will explore participatory public transport planning, such as urban living labs and other inclusive platforms, to investigate whether and how diverse needs of different societal groups are met.
Interested participants are invited to submit a proposal for a paper presentation, a short presentation or a workshop*. An abstracts of 250-300 words, including the format, should be submitted via the form by Friday, October 18th Thursday, October 31st, 2024.
Accepted contributors will be contacted in November to present their work in a conference session**.
*Workshops are allocated time slots of 2 hours. Please include aim, set-up, target audience and an outline of the activities in the abstract. Workshop organizers are asked to provide all necessary materials
**The participation fee is €100, including coffee breaks and lunches. Note that participants must secure their own accommodation and travel arrangements.
Between spring 2022 and spring 2025, the partners of Carin-PT are exploring public transport infrastructure and the built environment in relation to justice, equity and fairness. The project aims to provide theoretical and empirical understandings of how (through what mechanisms) costs and benefits of transition of PT are and will be distributed, amongst whom (which social groups and individuals) and where (which parts of the city and which kinds of built environments).
The findings of the projects will be presented towards the scientific community, the policy making realm, and anyone interested in the topics, in a final conference.
The final conference will take place on 6th and 7th of February at Uset – Brussels.
